Apple has entered the foldable phone market with the iPhone Duo, bringing a large 7.6-inch display, a new folding design and iOS 27 to a completely new iPhone form factor.

For years, foldable smartphones have been dominated by companies such as Samsung, Huawei and Google. Apple stayed away from the category while other manufacturers experimented with different designs, hinges and flexible displays.

That changed on September 9, 2026, when Apple introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. The device combines the familiar smartphone experience with a much larger internal display, allowing users to switch between a compact phone and a small tablet-like workspace.

Later in 2026, Apple plans to add support for the Apple Pencil with USB-C, giving the larger screen another potential use for notes, sketches and document work.

The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, the same generation of processor introduced with the iPhone 18 Pro models.

The iPhone Duo has a dual 48MP Fusion camera system, consisting of a main camera and an ultra-wide camera.

Unlike the iPhone 18 Pro models, the Duo does not include the Pro models’ variable-aperture main camera. Apple instead focuses on using the foldable design itself to create new camera possibilities.

For users who want a normal smartphone, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max provide a much more familiar experience at significantly lower prices.

Is Apple’s Foldable iPhone Actually Different?

Technically, Apple is not the first company to build a large foldable smartphone.
