Apple has confirmed that iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max preorders begin September 12, with retail availability starting September 18. The iPhone Duo is scheduled for preorder on October 16 and availability on October 23.
The iPhone Duo Is Apple’s Biggest New Addition
The headline product is undoubtedly the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
When closed, the Duo works like a conventional smartphone with a 5.4-inch outer display. When opened, it expands into a 7.6-inch display, giving users a much larger workspace for apps, media and multitasking. Apple has designed the device around the idea that users should not have to choose between carrying a phone and carrying a larger-screen device.
The Duo starts at $1,999, making it Apple’s most expensive iPhone and placing it firmly in the premium foldable market. It will be available with storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB.

Apple is entering the foldable market years after Samsung and other manufacturers began experimenting with the technology. That delay may actually work in Apple’s favour.

Variable aperture means the physical opening of the camera lens can change depending on the situation. A wider aperture can allow more light into the sensor, while a narrower setting can provide greater control over depth of field.
Apple has also added Pro Controls directly into the Camera app.

A20 Pro Powers the New Pro iPhones
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip.
Built using a 2-nanometer manufacturing process, A20 Pro includes a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says the chip provides:
- 50 percent more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro
- Up to 40 percent faster GPU performance
- Double the AI processing power
- Improved on-device AI performance
- Faster computational photography
The chip is not simply about making applications open faster. A large part of its purpose is handling increasingly demanding AI and image-processing workloads directly on the phone.
Apple Has Also Improved Cooling
Higher performance creates another problem: heat. To address this, Apple has introduced a redesigned thermal system with a new vapor chamber.
Apple says the vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the previous generation used in the iPhone 17 Pro, helping the device maintain performance for longer periods.
According to Apple, the new system enables up to a 40 percent improvement in sustained performance compared with the previous generation.
This matters particularly for demanding games, video processing and AI workloads, where a phone may need to operate at high performance for an extended period.
Battery Life Gets a Major Upgrade
Battery life is another major focus of the iPhone 18 Pro generation.
Apple says the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro can provide up to 36 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours. The Pro Max also gets a particularly large battery improvement because the eSIM-only design allows Apple to use space that would otherwise be occupied by a physical SIM system.
Apple says that five minutes of wired charging on the Pro Max can provide around seven hours of video playback. For the Pro model, Apple says wired charging can bring the phone to 50 percent in around 15 minutes, while wireless charging can reach 50 percent in around 30 minutes.
The Dynamic Island Gets Smaller
The Dynamic Island is not disappearing.
Instead, Apple has made it smaller while making it more useful. The redesigned Dynamic Island can display up to three Live Activities at the same time, allowing users to see more information without opening applications.
Face ID remains available on the iPhone 18 Pro models for unlocking, authentication and purchases. This is not the kind of upgrade that dramatically changes how the phone looks, but it improves how information is displayed during everyday use.
iOS 27 Brings Apple’s Next AI Push
Hardware is only part of Apple’s latest iPhone story.
The iPhone 18 Pro models launch with iOS 27, which introduces the next generation of Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI. The new Siri is designed to understand personal context, recognise what is displayed on the screen and answer a wider range of questions.

There is an important distinction here: current specifications indicate that the C2 modem is associated with the smaller iPhone 18 Pro, while the Pro Max appears to use a different modem arrangement. Apple has not clearly explained why the two Pro models differ in this area.
Both Pro models do, however, include Apple’s N1 wireless networking chip, which supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.
