New smart glasses are moving beyond cameras and audio, adding AI, navigation and hands-free computing that could change how we use smartphones.

Smart Glasses Are Becoming More Useful
Early smart glasses were mainly focused on cameras, speakers and basic notifications.
Newer devices are adding much more.
AI-powered glasses can recognise objects, answer questions, translate languages, describe surroundings and provide information without requiring the user to hold a phone. Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta glasses, for example, already combine cameras, open-ear audio and AI features. Meta has also introduced its Meta Ray-Ban Display, adding an in-lens display that can show information directly in the user’s view. That is an important change.
The glasses are moving from being a phone accessory toward becoming a computing interface of their own.
Why Look at a Screen When You Can Look at the World?
The biggest advantage of smart glasses is that they can provide information without taking your attention away from your surroundings. Imagine walking through a foreign city.
Instead of:
Stop → Take out phone → Open maps → Check directions
smart glasses could provide navigation information while you continue walking. The same idea could work for translation. Look at a sign, menu or notice, and compatible glasses could potentially translate or explain it without requiring you to photograph it with a phone. That makes computing feel less like using a device and more like interacting with the environment.
AI Could Be the Missing Piece
Artificial intelligence may be what finally makes smart glasses genuinely useful. A camera can see the world.
AI can understand what it sees.
That combination allows glasses to answer questions about objects, identify surroundings, summarise information and respond to voice commands. Google is also developing its Android XR platform for glasses and other extended-reality devices, with Gemini designed to provide assistance through wearable devices.
This suggests that the competition is moving beyond individual glasses. It is becoming a competition to build the software ecosystem behind wearable computing.
But Smart Glasses Still Have a Big Problem
They are not ready to replace smartphones. The biggest limitation is the display.
A phone provides a large screen for typing, editing photos, watching videos, shopping and managing complex applications. Even advanced smart glasses cannot yet provide the same comfortable interface for every task. Battery life is another challenge.
So are privacy concerns.
A pair of glasses with cameras can potentially record people without them immediately knowing. That makes social acceptance and clear recording indicators important parts of the technology. There is also the question of price, comfort and whether people actually want to wear connected glasses all day.
The Smartphone May Become the Hidden Computer
This could lead to a more realistic future. Instead of smart glasses completely replacing smartphones, the two devices could work together.
The phone could handle demanding processing, storage and connectivity while the glasses provide the visual and audio interface. In that model, the smartphone might become less visible but remain important.
You would not necessarily stop carrying a phone.
You might simply use it less.
The Next Battle Is for Your Field of View
The smartphone won the previous era of personal computing by putting the internet into everyone’s pocket. Smart glasses are attempting something different: putting digital information directly into the world around you. If companies can solve battery life, comfort, privacy, display quality and price, smart glasses could become one of the most important new computing platforms.
The question may not be:
“Will smart glasses replace smartphones?”
It may be:
“How much of the smartphone will we still need to touch?”
