Cursor has entered GitHub’s territory with Origin, a new code hosting platform designed to put repositories, pull requests and AI coding agents in one place.

Cursor Is Going Beyond Its Code Editor

Cursor became popular as an AI powered coding environment. Now it is moving into a much bigger part of software development, where developers store and manage their code. Its new platform, called Origin, lets teams create repositories, browse code, manage pull requests and work with AI agents directly inside the same environment. That puts Cursor into direct competition with established code-hosting platforms such as GitHub.

Why is Cursor competing with Github?

GitHub was built around a workflow where humans write code, create pull requests and review each other’s changes. AI coding agents are changing that workflow. An agent can now write code, modify files, create changes and work on tasks without a developer manually typing every line.

Origin can synchronize existing GitHub repositories, allowing teams to bring projects into Cursor while GitHub can remain the original source of truth. Changes and pull requests can also be synchronized between the platforms. That makes it easier for developers to experiment without completely changing their existing workflow.

What Makes Origin Different?

The biggest difference is the integration with Cursor’s AI agents.

Developers can ask agents questions about repositories, make code changes, update pull requests and push branches from the same environment. Origin also supports integrations with services including Vercel, Depot and Buildkite.

Cursor says more agent-native features are coming. That could become the most important part of the platform.

The competition may not simply be about who stores code better. It could become about who gives AI agents the best environment to build and manage software.

Is GitHub dying? Is the rise of Courser nearby?

Not yet.

Origin is still in early beta, while GitHub has a much larger ecosystem, developer community and collection of integrations. Cursor is currently presenting Origin as something developers can use alongside GitHub rather than as an immediate replacement.

But the launch is significant.

For years, GitHub has been one of the central platforms where modern software is built, reviewed and shared. Now, a company that started by changing how developers write code is trying to change where that code lives and how it is managed.
