The smartphone chip race has entered a new stage.

MediaTek has introduced the Dimensity 9600 Pro, its first flagship smartphone processor built using a 2-nanometre manufacturing process. The company says the new chip is designed to deliver stronger performance, lower power consumption and more advanced on-device artificial intelligence.

The launch matters because smartphone makers are working to make phones faster and smarter without sacrificing efficiency. Smaller chip designs could help improve gaming performance, battery life, photography, and AI capabilities in future flagship smartphones.

What Is the Dimensity 9600 Pro?

The MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro is a high-end mobile system-on-chip designed for flagship Android smartphones.

A system-on-chip, or SoC, combines several important components into a single package. These include the CPU, graphics processor, AI processing unit, connectivity systems, and other functions needed to operate a modern smartphone.

MediaTek says the Dimensity 9600 Pro uses TSMC’s advanced 2nm technology. It is designed to compete in the premium smartphone market, where it will face strong competition from Qualcomm, Apple and Samsung.

The company has also introduced the Dimensity 9600M, a separate chip aimed at high-end smartphones but built for a different performance and efficiency level.

What Does 2nm Actually Mean?

The term 2nm refers to a semiconductor manufacturing process. It does not mean that every part of the processor is exactly two nanometres wide.

Instead, it describes a new generation of chip manufacturing technology that allows companies to place more transistors into a smaller area.

Transistors are the tiny electronic switches that perform calculations inside a processor. More advanced manufacturing processes can help chip designers improve performance, reduce energy use or fit more processing capability into the same physical space.

TSMC’s 2nm technology also introduces a nanosheet transistor design. This is a change in transistor structure intended to improve control over electrical current and increase efficiency.

For smartphone users, the result could eventually mean faster phones that consume less power during demanding tasks.

What Performance Improvements Does MediaTek Claim?

MediaTek says the Dimensity 9600 Pro delivers major improvements over its previous generation.

The company reports a 51 percent improvement in AI prompt processing compared with its predecessor. This measurement refers to how quickly the chip can process the initial part of an AI request before the model begins generating a response.

The processor also includes a new architecture designed to improve CPU performance, graphics performance and power efficiency.

However, advertised improvements do not automatically translate into the same percentage increase in every real-world task. Actual results will depend on the smartphone’s cooling system, software, memory, battery capacity and the applications being used.

Why Is On-Device AI So Important?

Many AI features depend on cloud servers. A phone sends information to a remote data centre, the AI system processes it, and the result is sent back.

On-device AI works directly on the smartphone.

This can provide several advantages:

  • Faster responses for supported tasks
  • Better performance when internet access is limited
  • Reduced dependence on cloud services
  • Greater privacy for some types of processing
  • Lower network usage
  • More responsive camera, voice and translation features

The Dimensity 9600 Pro includes a dedicated neural processing unit, or NPU, for AI workloads. This allows supported AI tasks to run more efficiently without placing all the work on the main CPU.

Future smartphones using this type of chip could offer more advanced image editing, voice processing, personal assistants and AI agents directly on the device.

What Does the Chip Mean for Mobile Gaming?

Gaming is another major focus of flagship processors.

The Dimensity 9600 Pro includes a new graphics architecture designed to improve performance and energy efficiency. MediaTek says the chip can support higher frame rates and demanding graphical effects.

A stronger mobile GPU can help games deliver:

  • Higher frame rates
  • More detailed environments
  • Better lighting and shadows
  • Improved visual effects
  • Faster loading and smoother gameplay
  • More stable performance during long sessions

However, the processor is only one part of the gaming experience. The final result also depends on the phone’s display, cooling system, software optimisation and game support.

A powerful chip inside a poorly cooled phone may still reduce performance after extended gaming because of heat.

Faster Memory and Storage

The Dimensity 9600 Pro also supports newer memory and storage technologies, including LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage.

Memory affects how quickly a phone handles active applications and multitasking. Storage affects app loading, file transfers and the speed at which the device reads and writes data.

Faster memory and storage could help flagship phones manage larger applications, demanding games and AI models more effectively.

They may also improve the experience of recording high-resolution video, editing large files and switching between multiple applications.

Which Phones Will Use the Dimensity 9600 Pro?

MediaTek has announced the processor, but the final availability will depend on smartphone manufacturers.

The chip is expected to appear in upcoming flagship devices from major Android brands. MediaTek has indicated that smartphones using the new platform will arrive soon, but specific models and regional availability may differ.

Consumers should therefore check the processor listed in the official specifications of each phone. A manufacturer may use different chips in different markets or offer separate versions of the same model.

How Does It Change the Competition?

The launch increases pressure on the companies competing in the premium smartphone chip market.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors, Apple’s A-series chips and Samsung’s Exynos processors are all competing to deliver better performance, AI capabilities and power efficiency.

The move to 2nm manufacturing is important because advanced chip production is becoming a major part of the smartphone competition.

Companies are no longer competing only on processor speed. They are also competing on:

  • AI processing
  • Battery efficiency
  • Camera performance
  • Gaming stability
  • Connectivity
  • Thermal management
  • Software integration
  • Local AI capabilities

MediaTek’s new chip gives Android phone manufacturers another option for building high-end devices with advanced processing capabilities.

Will 2nm Phones Automatically Have Better Battery Life?

Not necessarily.

A smaller manufacturing process can improve efficiency, but battery life depends on the complete smartphone.

The display, modem, camera system, software, battery capacity and cooling design all influence power consumption.

A manufacturer might use the efficiency improvements to extend battery life. Another company might use the additional performance to run more demanding applications. Some phones may use the extra efficiency to support more AI features instead.

This means the benefits of 2nm technology will vary between devices.

What Should Smartphone Buyers Expect?

Most users will not need to upgrade simply because a phone uses a 2nm processor.

People who already own a recent flagship smartphone may notice little difference in everyday activities such as messaging, browsing and video streaming.

The biggest improvements are likely to matter more to users who:

  • Play demanding mobile games
  • Use AI tools frequently
  • Edit photos and videos
  • Run several applications at once
  • Record high-resolution video
  • Need strong long-term performance
  • Want better efficiency in a premium phone

The quality of the complete device will remain more important than the processor name alone.

The Future of Smartphone Chips

The Dimensity 9600 Pro shows how quickly smartphone processors are evolving.

As AI becomes a larger part of mobile software, manufacturers need chips that can process more information while using less energy. Advanced manufacturing technologies such as 2nm could help make that possible.

The next stage of the smartphone race will not be based only on benchmark scores. It will also involve how efficiently a phone can run AI models, games, cameras and everyday applications without overheating or draining its battery.

MediaTek’s new processor is an important step in that direction, but its real impact will become clearer when the first smartphones reach consumers.
